How do I access library articles and databases from off-campus?

Last updated on Apr 05, 2024

Step 1: From the Find it Results list or the Database A-Z list, click on the full-text link or a database name to select it. You should see a Library Resources sign-in on the next page.

Step 2: Enter your myGCC username/password and click on submit

Note: Once you have logged in, you may change from one database to another without logging in again. However, each time you reconnect to the Internet, you will need to repeat this process. If you have problems connecting to other databases or seem to lose your privileges, just close your browser and then reconnect.

For questions, or problems with your network username and password:

  • Ask a Librarian for help
  • Try a different internet browser (If in Edge, try Chrome or Firefox, etc.)
  • Also, try a reset of your myGCC password using the password reset link inside of myGCC
  • Call the GCC Help Desk (866) 614-5004 (Toll Free)

How can I renew an item I've borrowed?

Last updated on Apr 28, 2023    Loans

If you are a GCC student, faculty or staff member, login to your library account with your myGCC credentials.

There is a link to sign in from our Home page navigation menu, on the right side, called My Library Account.

Once logged in, you may view your loans by clicking on your name in the upper right corner, and then My Loans.

From here you can select to renew if the item is not overdue. Items may be renewed twice unless the material has been requested by another library patron. If the item is already overdue, it must be renewed in person at the library.

Community patrons can visit or call the Circulation Desk at 585-345-6834 or 585-343-0055 - Ext. 6350 for information on their account such as renewing and paying fines.

Here is a VIDEO demonstrating this process.

How do I find books by diverse authors?

Last updated on Feb 14, 2023

There a couple of ways to approach this, depending on what you're looking for.

First, you may do an author search in our catalog if you know who you're looking for.

We have a Racial Equity and Inclusion Guide where we have included many recommendations, from biographies and memoirs to fiction and poetry.

If you are looking specifically for non-fiction books on racism or historical events, a subject search will likely be your most effective method. For example, if you are researching Race relations in the U.S., there is a subject heading that links books on this topic. Our librarians are always ready and willing to help you find sources on such topics.

How do I find a book for my research topic in the library?

Last updated on Mar 16, 2022

There are a few access points to search our library catalog, where you can find the books we own. You can use the search box on the main page, or click on Find Books & Media in the top navigation bar.
If you want to start your search only in the GCC Library and for books, you'll want to ensure you're using the "GCC Catalog" search scope.

Enter your search keywords into the search box and click search. And to limit to only books, you can filter by Material Type in the left navigation menu [see image].
Please note that each item in our catalog will have a material type label above the search result, and the availability and location (call number) is at the bottom of each search result [see image].

Librarians at the Information Desk will happily help you locate the book. Please see this video for more information.

What is Interlibrary Loan (ILL)?

Last updated on Sep 06, 2022    Loans

Interlibrary Loan (ILL) services allow members of the college community to access materials from other libraries.

GCC's Alfred C. O'Connell library cooperates with libraries nation-wide to lend and borrow materials to support research and education. Resource Sharing is a term referring to an agreement between a group of libraries, as we participate in Resource Sharing with SUNY for physical materials (not articles). These loan periods are longer, often ship more quickly, and are easily renewed through your My Library Account dashboard.

ILLiad is the technology we use to manage Interlibrary Loan outside of the SUNY network, sometimes borrowing books from across the country.

Please request your items as early as possible before your assignment deadline.
